 Note that the ls should not fail, either - is that caused by the '@' in
 the dir name, i.e. by escape problems?

 I realize that this is probably a minor issue for most users.  But alam it
 is a kind of blocker for me at the moment :-(  Will try to fix it, but it
 would be great if Hartmut could have a look in the morning... - thanks.
